Saw this in an io9 comment the other day and thought I’d share...
Have you ever wondered why the Millennium Falcon is:
A “freighter” but doesn’t seem to have much/any space on board??
Has that weird notch on the front??
And why the cockpit is offset to one side??

I actually did not know that and I’m ashamed as a nerd.

It pushes it real good

Well I'll be damned.

OMG it makes soo much sense now! I don’t know if thats canon or not, but it should be.
Also I’d imagine that if its got engines strong enough to push a huge barge, then it would be pretty damn quick on its own

That explains why it can do the Kessel Run in less than 12 Parsecs, it’s fast as shit when unladen.

Right????!

The Millenium Falcon was basically unofficially officially designed for smugling - so that sketch up there wouldn’t make much sense. It’s no accident that smugglers and the Rebels loved and used so many ships from the Corellian Engineering Corporation. And why the Empire didn’t like Corellia in general.

Wow... how have I never known this?

That’s pretty much word-for-word my reaction, too. If this is a “happy little accident” fan theory, good job on whomever came up with it!
EDIT: According to
Wookieepedia
, the ship is indeed a pusher vehicle.

For some strange reason, I knew that.

This is important because anything being towed behind would probably be burnt up from the engine(s?)

Ohh that makes a lot of sense. It’s basically a space version of a pushboat. Regardless if this was intended, or someone just realized it made sense, it’s awesome.

This just blew my mind. A thousand stars for you sir.

IIRC this is pretty much canon.

Can you provide a link to the comment? I’d like to give it another star.

I was gonna add a link in the post, but it’s from a week or two ago.. I had saved the jpeg when I saw it and forgot about it till this am.... but I did a quick search before posting and didn’t see the orig comment off-hand..... sorry

Wow, I feel like I just had an epiphany today, thanks. My star wars knowledge just went +1.

probably a turbo diesel.

it would be neat if they actually showed the Falcon being used for its intended purpose in the upcoming Han Solo movie

well now I feel stupid. this makes so much sense!

I’m pretty sure it’s a fan theory and the original design was inspired by an olive next to a hamburger with a bite out of it.
But that could be hearsay too.

Who did know??

I get it... i’m a debbie downer... but i kinda hate the move to explain all the little things like this. Leave some mystery.

I wouldn’t lend much information from Wookiepedia much credit. 99% of it is just made up by rabid fans who have nothing better to do than ascribe serial numbers to droids from obscure comics.

So, basically, Han Solo and Chewbacca tool around the galaxy in the space-fairing equivalent of this?
I guess it checks out...

This is epic. It make’s Han’s version so much cooler. It’s pretty much this:
And it helps explain why Luke was so taken aback when he saw it. A freighter? Why take a freighter? And think about it at the end of IV and VI, when it shows up to attack the Death Star. Totally out of place but still way awesome.
The hot rodded nature of the Falcon goes slightly underappreciated by car people, I think.

The Han Solo movie might be good for something after all.

I don’t think many did. It’s never referenced in the movies. I’ve read the Han Solo books, and it’s not in there, either.

It’s a Cobra. Huge power with nothing to haul around. Outside atmosphere, there are no aerodynamics to deal with, and you don’t need torque. Just pure, horsepower-like thrust.

All the official cargo is just to throw off what’s under the floors in the pusher. Makes sense to me.

Same. This is rocking my world. The Falcon is my favorite fictional spaceship.

I’ve read more star wars books than I care to admit. I also played the collectible card game.
